What is MTL, RDL or DL vaping?

MTL, RDL & DL types of vape draws | Pharmacy World Australia | Blog

There are three types of vape draws or styles of vaping - mouth-to-lung (MTL), restricted direct-lung (RDL) and direct-lung (DL) vaping. They describe the way you prefer to inhale your vapour or previously, your smoke.

A draw style may seem like a simple preference but it actually differentiates both vaping kits and people who are vaping. Depending on what draw best delivers the throat hit, vapour density and amount you need to adequately replace the way you smoked cigarettes can effect the success of your smoking cessation journey and determine which vaping kit and substance is most suitable for you.

The below will help you understand what each draw type is and each of our product descriptions will include what type of draw each device/accessory is suited to.

MTL vaping

Mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping is where you inhale vapour to the mouth, briefly hold, then inhale it to your lungs. MTL vaping is a restricted draw that most closely simulates the draw of a cigarette for many people.

Features of devices that are suitable to MTL vaping include:

  • low-wattage (5-25W)
  • high resistance (ohm) compatible pods or coils (0.7-1.4 ohm)
  • slim bore drip tips/mouthpieces
  • usually easier to use devices.

The type of vapour production you can expect from MTL devices include:

  • cool to mildly-warm temperature
  • low amount of vapour production
  • tight/restricted draw
  • low throat hit with freebase nicotine e-liquid, better throat hit with nicotine salt e-liquid.

RDL vaping

Restricted direct-lung (RDL) vaping is where you draw vapour straight to the lungs (like direct-lung vaping) but with some restriction. This draw type is considered to be in between MTL and DL vaping; not too loose or too tight a draw - it's semi-restricted.

Features of devices/accessories that are suitable to RDL vaping include:

  • usually low to mid-wattage (5-50W)
  • mid resistance (ohm) compatible pods or coils (0.5-0.8 ohm)
  • slim to medium bore drip tips/mouthpieces
  • medium airflow or adjustable airflow
  • usually easier to use devices but many advanced devices also have this option.

The type of vapour production you can expect from RDL devices/accessories include:

  • mildly-warm to warm temperature
  • medium amount of vapour production
  • restricted draw
  • good throat hit with freebase nicotine e-liquid, better throat hit with nicotine salt e-liquid.

DL vaping

Direct-lung (DL) vaping is a very loose draw, where you inhale vapour straight to the lungs (like taking a breath in through the mouthpiece). DL draws seem to be preferred by heavy smokers of high milligram cigarettes.

Features of devices/accessories that are suitable to DL vaping include:

  • usually high-wattage (up to 220W)
  • usually use replaceable coils with tanks but there are exceptions
  • low resistance (ohm) compatible coils (0.15-0.5 ohm)
  • large bore drip tips/mouthpieces
  • high airflow or adjustable airflow
  • usually more advanced devices with adjustable settings.

The type of vapour production you can expect from DL devices/accessories include:

  • warm to very warm temperature
  • high amount of vapour production
  • very loose draw
  • good throat hit with both freebase nicotine and nicotine salt e-liquid.
